The Knight street bridge was built in 1974 to replace the old Fraser street bridge , it helped to take the load off the Oak street bridge and essentially became the Commercial truck bridge as the Oak street bridge had heavy vehicles redirected to the Knight street bridge corridor .
Today the bridge is backed up during the rush hour ( 0500 to 0900) and 1500 to 1700 daily where traffic backs up with commuters getting back from work in Surrey and other outlying areas ....
The bridge is capable of handling more traffic provided that ther are (6 ) lanes available for traffic to move through . At Present the bridge is designed with 6 lanes on the North side up to Mitchel Island , as you drive south it narrows down to 4 lanes . If I remember correctly the bridge supports were already designed to handle the 6 lane precast sections , insofar as expanding the bridge ,up to 16 odd sections of precast roadway would need to be replaced to get the bridge to a Full 6 lane roadway , the highways on the Richmond side can easily be expanded for this ...
