I'm all for the environment. In fact I hate driving but I commute from Surrey to Burnaby every day for work it takes me about an hour and I would love to either work closer to home or live closer to work reality is homes closer to work are unaffordable for me and work closer to home pays too little for me to afford to live even where I do. I would love to take public transit but that would increase my commute from 1 hour to 2 hours 45 minutes. (Assuming no delays or cancellations) so instead of leaving at 6 in the morning and getting home at 4 in the evening I'd have to leave at 4:15 and wouldn't get home until 5:45 That's over a 12 hour day. How do I reconcile this. Transit improvement cannot fix this as they would be running at an incredible defect if they expanded routes in both the areas I have to travel in as even if ridership approached 100% the fuel for the bus for each trip would cost exponentially more than the fares they would collect. And most people I talk to who don't live within a small radius around a skytrain station are in the same boat. The reality is that we NEED personal transportation and we need to move away from fossil fuels in our personal transportation I can say with certainty that my next vehicle will be 100% electric which is by no means perfect but is a huge step an improvement over petrol. But you know what we still need roads for these. We need roads for ANY personal vehicle, wether it be a car (electric or otherwise) or even a bicycle. So to make any assertion that Gatewaysucks for an environmental reason is incredible shortsighted and patently false.
It seems to me that a lot of the people who complain about these kind of projects aren't the people affected by the problem they're trying to resolve.

The Project would result in the loss of approximately 105 ha of agricultural land from the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) in Delta. MoT estimates that another 20 ha of currently productive land would convert to lower agricultural utility as a result of severance and isolation effects (Assessment Report pg 11).
MoT estimates the proposed Project will impact about 520 properties and a total of approximately 248.2 ha of land including agricultural, residential and commercial or industrial parcels that will be required from a variety of landowners including municipalities, private companies and individuals.
Potential adverse impacts on wildlife resources include noise and visual disturbance, loss, alteration or fragmentation of habitat, changes in wildlife movement patterns, and wildlife mortality due to vehicle collisions. The total loss of wildlife habitat from the Project is estimated to be 113 ha (pg 14).

My main objection to Gateway project is I've heard farmland will be destroyed as part of the project.
Hope you add farmland issue to list. (perhaps include estimate on how much farmland will be destroyed by the project)
Information from the EA report.
